More and more people are installing or having someone else install a wireless router in their homes. The reason is simple: wireless networks offer freedom, flexibility and convenience for the home. Just consider the cordless phones used today compared to the wired ones we used before!
A few years ago I installed a wireless network in our home. We were already using a cable modem and had installed a wired (Ethernet) Linksys router to share the broadband service (Internet access) between my computer and our daughter Candice’s wired computer. When Valerie decided to continue her education and I bought her a computer, I wanted to find an easy way to share the broadband service without running more wires between the room her computer was in and the room the cable modem was in. At the time I chose to add a Linksys Wireless Access Point 802.11b. This device was made to connect to and sit on top of my existing Linksys router.
Additionally, I added a wireless Linksys print server so that Valerie could print without having a cable connected to her computer. This allows her to take her laptop to any room in the house and still access the Internet and printer. It worked great! Later, I upgraded the router to an all-in-one Linksys 802.11g wireless router/hub with Speed Boaster which provided greater speed and even fewer wires to deal with.
Since that time, I have added other devices that can take advantage of our wireless home network such as TiVo DVR ( Digital Video Recorder, records video pictures digitally on a hard disk drive. More on that another day) http://www.tivo.com/ and Airport Express (for streaming music from my computer to a pair of powered speakers in another room http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ .
The cost for installing a wireless home network has come down and it may be something you want to check out for your home in order to begin enjoying the benefits of a wireless home!
